Mine is not like that at all and it is a 5K replacement. I would say yours isn't that bad. Trust me, you could get a lot worse in another replacement.

What do you mean by "5K"? I know I could get something worse but this bleed occurs on both sides. The pictures kind of dim it a little bit. My photography skills aren't too great haha. Do you think Apple will replace it for sure or is it kind of chancey? I don't want to drive 30 mins to and 30 mins back for nothing.

Actually, if all you did is format the drive (and you didn't install), it may very well be possible to get all of your data back. You'll need another OS to boot from, but if you manually recreate the partition table, it's likely that the windows format did not quite reach where the HFS+ directory structure is stored and only overwrote the partition table itself and parts of the EFI partition.

Once you're booted from a good OS, you can rewrite the partition table from Terminal. This will have the benefit that your existing volume won't need to be reformatted. You may need a utility like Disk Warrior to clean up the directory structure afterward.

First, you'll need to figure out the disk number of the hard drive. If you're booted from the machine (rather than a different machine, using the drive as an external), it's going to be /dev/disk0. The following will rewrite the partition table to near-default (possibly a little bigger primary volume):

    sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/disk0 bs=512 count=10 conv=sync,noerror
    sudo gpt destroy /dev/disk0
    sudo gpt create /dev/disk0
    sudo gpt add -i1 -b40 -s409600 -tC12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B /dev/disk0
    sudo gpt add -i2 -b409640 -t48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC /dev/disk0

Then use Disk Utility (or preferably Disk Warrior) to repair the directory structure.

If you don't want to do all that or can't, you can use Disk Utility to format the drive from the Mac OS X Install disk. I've seen situations where that still wouldn't work, so you may have to do the first two commands anyway.

Apple will probably update iPods with a slight tweak to their DRM, breaking any music people have downloaded from anyone other than Apple.

For sure, and hope sooner rather than later. I love what that guy did for the deCSS stuff but hate him for messing with my Apple:mad:

Apple leagal better kick the crap out of that guy until he stops for a little while at least.

The more he exploits it the worse it looks on Apple and the less content people will want to put on it. (In some ways)

But Apple should have the right to keep iPod/iTS closed from others is they want to.

My iMac G5 is really starting to show its age. I can't decide if I want a 27" iMac or a 13" MacbookAir. I don't really need an optical drive. I use it to import CD's to iTunes. I can always do that on anther Mac and transfer the files later.

Why European mobile service is better.

Almost everyone gets free incoming minutes.

Yeah, and you also let the person calling you pay a tarriff up to four times the rate of a fixed line call. Calling a mobile number can cost five times as much as making an international call 20.000 kilometres away. Ever wonder why Europeans don't use their mobiles to make voice calls? :)

I'm going to be out there... Question is when should I get there. I spoke with Apple Store and they said the Mall opens its doors at 7am. They open the foodcourt doors first. You know what that means... A/C at 7am.

Line to start outside FoodCourt asap. Let me know if anyone else is going, lets Meetup!

I haven't ventured into the HD world yet so I'm not up to speed on the screen res needed for HD. I do however seem to recall posts lamenting for higher res screens for HD playback. If that is the case, then resolution independence would be a must. Otherwise the UI would become so small it would become unusable. Am I way off base here?

I was just curious how long the carriers store the contents of text messages in the U.S. Do they permanently store information like phone number texted, date, and time? Is there any evidence that they in fact do store the content of text messages sent for more than seventy-two hours or so?

Say you have 2 laptops with the same size screen, but different resolution screens, e.g. 17" LCD, one with 1920x1024 and another with 1440x768.

Right now the Apple menu and the text on it will appear smaller on the higher resolution screen, because the pixels are smaller and the size of the menu bar is defined in pixels.

On the resolution independant system the size of the menu bar (and everything else) will be the same, regardless of the size of pixels. So the menu bar will be 1/4 inch high instead of 25 pixels.

    Nice explanation dr_lha :)

    Question(s)-
My brand new 12" ibook G4 seems to make a lot of hard drive noise, even when I'm not doing anything. The noises sound pretty healthy- it's basically a constant, very soft whir (just the spinning, I'm sure) and an occasional clicking (not a "crap, I'm broken" clicking, but more like a "alright, let's kick these heads into place" clicking) every minute or so (sometimes longer).
I'm not trying to be goofy with my descriptions here, but after all I've read in these forums about clicking being bad, I wanted to mention that none of the noises mine are making sound deadly. Rather, I was thinking that maybe this is Spotlight's regularly scheduled indexing? If that's maybe what this is, does anyone know of a way to regulate Spotlight's indexing (make it less frequent or turn it off altogether unless you ask it to) in order to lessen hard drive access and in turn perhaps save battery life?
Any opinions that point to a faulty hard drive are also welcome, but I've had the ibook for a week now and have experienced no problems outside of both the hard drive and optical drive being noisier than I would have liked (seems like a common issue with these ibooks). The hard drive noises remind me of when my imac's hard drive kicks in from or settles down to a rest.
    Thanks!

Scr U funky. 13MBP has been their best selling mbp. Why should they kill that? Because you don't like it? Then suck it up.

Yea. those avg. Joe who are buying Apple's "Design", I think they wouldnt care much.
But for those who really loves apple's product, this is definitely a deal&heartbreaker
    Just my 2cent

Introducing Apple Galileo™. :) All-in-one PDA, digital camera, phone and mp3 player.

And what we all get is is 4 things in one that do not work as they should. I understand convergance of technology, however a phone needs a keypad, (maybe not later when voice tech works better) a PDA needs a larger screen to view thing and maybe write on, a camera needs good lens capable of zoom and other adjustments you do not get with fix lens and finally MP3 plays need stereo head sets which a Phone does not.

So put this all together does not give use a great solution. I beleive in time this will change, But i rather have a phone that works great a phone verses where we have not.

I blame the "Kids" becuase they all seem willing to accept lesser quality for more gagets. The phone companies spent billions of $ and 30 year making your phone calls clear and now everyone is willing to give up thier land line for a cell phone for lesser quality and cost more.

Can another company even sell music at less than $0.99?

Even if they could... would you pay $.79 for something that might not work in the next release of iTunes software?

The high price comes from the features like USB hard drive and printer sharing. So yes there are cheaper alternatives but you'd be hard pressed to find these features on other routers.

As for the update, I'm sure Apple will release an update. If not you will probably find the updater leaked to the net when the router starts shipping late next month.

My university's tech department uses several of THESE (http://www.newertech.com/products/charger_cond.php) to charge their library loaner Macbook batteries between checkouts. I asked them about it once as I was having the need to keep two batteries charged. Said that it helps with conditioning as well.

Yeah I called right before they closed also. The guy didn't have any solid knowledge of a shipment, but confirmed the 9am early open if they have ipad inventory.
I'll probably head over around 7:30... is that early enough?
    It better not be raining!!!

I hope it is raining, it just means less people will show up probably. Snow would be great.
