Bit of advice needed please. I'm in need of a system for creating web galleries that's, to put it bluntly, foolproof. What I'm really after is something that conforms to the following criteria:
 Free.
Will run on a Linux server (can use SQL/PHP etc).
Will allow me to upload the images to the correct directory via FTP, and run a script to create the gallery. (I could just manage to get my computer illiterate Dad to master this, as I've spent the past two years getting him to learn basic FTP.)
It doesn't have to resize the images on the server, for sake of uploading speed that will be done on the local computer before uploading.
Will conform to a pre-defined template once the images are uploaded and the script is run (basically foolproof).
If anyone could direct me to anything which sounds like it's suitable, it would be appreciated. Google searches have not proved fruitful, it's one of those things where finding a useful search string is incredibly difficult.

On the playback side, few people realize just hwo cpu intensive h.264 is, even a 1.67ghz g4 will drop fraims at 720p let alone 1080i/p. You definantly need dual G5 2.0Ghz cpus or better for smooth 1080p playback. Thats part of the reason why there are so many specialized chips used in the industry to decode h.264, like in the ipod which can barley handle its low resolution decoding of h.264
Yes, this is true, but the original poster was asking about working with the footage with FinalCut Pro.
I'm not certain, but I don't think the video from the HD Sony camcorder is encoded with h.264. I believe it's HDV, which perhaps is less processor intensive.
So basically, the question is whether the OP could work with his HDV footage on his 1.67-G4-PB with reasonable system responsiveness?

I've never been to an Apple launch day before and have no idea of when I should get there. I'd like to wait in line but still have to work tomorrow morning. When is a good time to start waiting?

Appreciate the feedback, saves me at least $250. The one I had found for $650 With it installed had less memory, but had a 15in monitor and backlit keyboard at expense of less memory. Think one of the 13-in I had found will work fine for me without it.

thanks for the hints!
shipping might take a bit, because I live in Germany.
I went for Stealth Guards (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=997633)
hopefully it arrives before the new Touch does ;)

Yeah well acually it seems that they look like they are hosting every video from here:

They have a link to there on their main quicktime general site so maybe they have a agreement or something?
The video still kicks tho.

Just wondering if anyone can help with a recommendation for a scanner. I want to scan in my old lecture notes I have from university. They've been gathering dust under my bed and generally taking up space for years. It would be handy if I could transfer these notes to my Mac.
I'm looking for a scanner that comes in at under 200 (willing to go slightly higher if needed, although lower would be preferred). I'm unlikely to ever scan in any photos, umm ever! So my need is for this scanner to be always used to scan in documents that are txt based.
Thanks for reading and hope someone can help
Jason
P.s I have a 12 Rev A Al book, so no usb2. But I should be upgrading in the near future. Not sure if this is relevant

I found this article interesting after not finding my iPad 2 today at my BB.
http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/best-buy-shrinks-big-box-grow/
"The company will be focusing on key consumer products such as mobile phones, tablets, gaming (possibly used games), and is looking to channel the savings from cuts into small-format stores."
Im no market or admin guy but I wonder if smaller stores means less chances of having Apple booths in them?? Or am I looking at it the wrong way?

1080p/24 video from the EOS 7D is about 48Mbps, or 6MB/sec. That should give you an idea of how fast of a card you really need for using the camera in video mode. Although it is nice to have a card with fast read speeds when it's time to dump the card.
The ultra-fast CF cards (like UDMA 6) are mostly only necessary for still photographers that quickly shoot using fast cameras in RAW format, where individual images can be 30MB+ and their recording delays need to be a fraction of second.

Well, it looks like there will be alot of new features and devices soon from apple.
lets hope apple keeps up the good work, advancements in technology, software and hardware will continue making users lifes easier.
things like smart device/cell phones, itv media center hubs (also HDTV including Blu-Ray), continuing development of more software and making apple an all media type system where all aspects can work seamlessly.
looking forward to the new stuff apple comes with.

Thanks, but I was not able to find anything on how long the battery is capable of lasting. If I recall correctly, my first battery lasted at least 4 hours (possibly longer). I do not have too many programs running - at least not much more then initially.
Read the BATTERY LIFE FROM A CHARGE section. There is no simple answer, since so many factors affect your individual battery life. That section will explain more fully.

Oh now I really screwed it up. I deleted my default search paths since that was one solution I saw online (and it broke my program) and now I can't insert the old search paths back in :(

so i know everyone always says that apple cant actually tell that you jailbreak you phone if you just restore it, but is this actually true?
i want to know because my home button has been finicky (it sometimes doesnt work), and since I have a warranty i want to make sure that apple will still service the phone if it dies completely.
now i know all of the crazy super pro-jailbreak people will come and be like "no there is absolutely no way that they will be able to tell of course blah blah blah" but does anyone actually know this for certain (proof?)
it seems like they would be able to check some log or something and it will look like you have not used your phone for like a month or however long you had it jailbroken and they will figure it out. or it seems like they would have some other way to detect this. they are apple and they are crazy opposed to jailbreaking so are you completly sure that there is no way they can tell? i really want to jailbreak because it is awesome but i bought the warranty and since my home button might break i want to make sure it will still be covered.

Hi there,
if he's into dance stuff then Reason is a fairly good bet. The company is Propellorheads. Software is called "Reason".
Generally speaking, though, if you want top quality production software, get Logic by Emagic (now owned by apple)

- iTunes 7 will confirm if you wish to re-download content, and has a backup utility for backing up your library. Also introduced is a feature called "skip count" which tells you how often you have skipped a song.
This is not new to iTunes 7. This has been in iTunes since practically version 4. Where did you get the idea that this was a new feature?
BTW, the iPod software update 1.2 for video iPods does not appear to give the new Advanced Search function to older 5G iPods.
no one seems to be pointing out that they got rid of educational pricing for iPods... that's a bummer.
It's not really that much of a bummer. The max discount you ever got was $30 (I think, not sure if you got more for a $399 model), but with the new models, Apple discounted the highest iPods by $50 instead. So if you buy at full price, you're still paying less than you would have with the educational discount previously.
I don't think the shuffles ever had special educational pricing, and I'm not sure the nanos ever did either.
