So guys, I was in the laundry room the other day (where we have a bookcase for discarded reading material) and someone had left behind these:

It's called "Vogue Patterns: The Ultimate Sewing Magazine."

So women have their own sewing magazines!  And whereas our magazines are teeming with babes, scantily clad if clad at all, these sewing magazines are 100% male-free-zones.

Seriously -- Not. One. Guy.

There's nothing cutting edge in "Vogue Patterns" (think Spiegel catalog) but this magazine manages to be both slick and wholesome.  Weird.

If the gals like the dresses they can buy the patterns and make them, and I suspect they do.  What a racket.  They're not settling for 20-year-old "relaxed" jeans and bowling shirt patterns like we do.

Men, I'm a little worried about what this magazine portends.  Could women someday dominate home sewing as they currently do Sunday afternoon television?

It seems outrageous even to contemplate but, judging from what I've seen in "Vogue Patterns," possible.

Isn't it time we started our own pattern magazine?

Soon they'll be cooking too.

Global Warming, Political Upheaval, and Cher

OK, so it was nearly 90 degrees here yesterday, the international news just goes from bad to worse, and don't even get me started on the national news...


But I have more pressing things to think about.  Barring Armageddon, I still have to finish my yellow dress, don't I?  Check this out: 

This is the last pic of my 1941 outfit before the big "reveal" because, let's face it, you have to keep 'em wanting more.  (Gosh, what an assumption; perhaps you're really wanting less!  No, I won't even entertain the possibility.)

Yesterday's Salvation Army find was a full nylon acetate slip with a B. Altman's label in a 36" chest, and a purple faux snakeskin clutch.  It really does make me wonder if there isn't a force greater than me determined to pull this outfit together.

Question: must I belt the blouse?  To my eye it looks perfectly nice without one, but it is called for in the pattern.  Can you tell I'm not too keen on making the belt?

Aside from that, all that's left to do is to hem the skirt.  If you know me, you know that hemming ranks just behind root canal on my "dread" list -- and my last root canal was in 1972 but this skirt must be hemmed today, meaning hemming has pulled ahead.  I'm not sure how I'll accomplish this -- blind hem?  whipstitch?  -- but rest assured the skirt will be shorter -- and chic-er -- the next time you see it.

But enough about me.  Can we talk about Cher?

If you take your fashion seriously, you simply must watch this video through to the end.  Not to give it all away, but it's a Bob Mackie-esque trip through fashion history from Eve through...Cher.  And I thought Cathy was a clothes horse!

I Am Curious (Yellow)

 

Forgive the obscure Swedish film reference -- and the socks.

We're still seeing life through French's mustard-colored glasses here in Apartment 12D.  The skirt is almost done and just needs to be hemmed.  Yesterday I made pretty good progress on the blouse:



There are still adjustments to make, facings to add -- and sleeves, sleeves, must not forget the sleeves.

These turned up at the Salvation Army.  They have a definite Forties vibe, don't you think?





Obviously somebody up there likes me but hates my feet: they're nearly impossible to walk in.   Thankfully it's Cathy who'll suffer for beauty, not me.

And then there's this aubergine confection:



This is actually two yards of ratty old tulle found at the bottom of a remnant bin at some dive-y fabric store.  It looks like the mice got to it before I did, but I think it has possibilities.  Schiaparelli meets Miss Havisham.

So it's coming together.

A number of you had project-related questions yesterday I'll try to answer.

1. No, I am not bothering with the welt pockets or the bound buttonholes.  The sheet is too thin for them, for one thing, and the cheap cotton-poly fabric just doesn't warrant the effort.  If I really want to do this again, in a better fabric (and for a more appreciative woman), I might reconsider.  Right now I just want to finish this and get on with my life.



Would you believe I'm also supposed to make a belt for this outfit -- with a buckle no less!  It's work, kids, work.

2. Cathy does indeed keep many of her clothes at my house and I do think that's why she had me edit my wardrobe down to almost nothing last month.  She's sneaky, that girl.

3.  My hunch is that anyone who slept on sheets this color was either blind or trying to hide a bladder problem.  I get a headache just looking at this dress for more than a minute; it's like staring into the sun.

On an unrelated note, Michael and I were coming back from somewhere we'd been with the dogs a few months ago, and a French tourist (who happened to be a photographer) asked if he could take our picture.  Yesterday he emailed us a copy.  I look terrible (it pre-dates my new look) but the dogs look cute, don't you think? OK, let's finish this little jonquil number today, shall we?

Back in the saddle

So I sewed yesterday! 

I finally cut my fabric for Simplicity 3873, my two-piece dress from 1941, and started putting this puppy together.  I decided to do the whole thing in the YELLOW cotton-poly sheet I'd found at the Salvation Army a few weeks ago.

I enjoy the challenge of working in a color I despise would not normally choose, and there are some great complementary colors (at least I think they're complementary) like purple that will find their way into the finished outfit, no doubt, and play down the YELLOW.  I may even find a way to use this:



Putting together the eleven-panel skirt was challenging, but I'm getting used to working with pattern pieces that have no printed markings.





What's amazing is that all the little holes and V-shaped cuts still make sense after all these years. So far this seems like a splendidly drafted pattern. 

While the individual panels look symmetrical, they are not, so I had to pay close attention to fitting each piece correctly to its neighbor.  A dirty little secret (I have a lot of those) is that normally I don't mark anything unless I have to, but rather just eyeball what lines up with what.  That wasn't possible here.

Today I'll attach the waistband and insert an approximately 8" invisible zipper.  Here's the skirt on the pattern envelope:



And here's mine, from the inside.  Did I mention that the eleven panels are five different sizes (i.e., two of each pattern piece, with one additional piece)?



I've been pressing the dickens out of this skirt because cotton-poly doesn't "give" the way cotton does.  I don't want puckers.

It fits me, so it should fit Cathy too if she hasn't put on weight since I saw her last.  She's shooting a pilot out in L.A. -- would you believe they're re-making "It's a Living?"

I fear "Small Wonder" is next.

But back to the skirt.
