The blinking folder/question mark icon means the computer can't find a viable OS to boot from. You never did answer Intell's question: did you install OS X onto the replacement drives? You can't boot from a blank HDD.

I believe i did answer Intels question. Cool. Thanks

I think that local connection is what they used - cool stuff. Is that in MX 2004 or the newest version?

clayj - that works in the single flash object on your page - layers in the same main file. What local connection is doing is having two or more separate flash objects on a page among regular html text and images and communicating between them.

DActually, I'm not talking about layers in the same SWF file... I'm talking about many different SWF files (my site has over 600 of them) all sending messages at each other telling each other what to do.

Now, as far as that particular page goes, assuming that they're not loading all of the SWF files on top of a common "layer 0" SWF file like I am, then yes, the local connection thing would be the way to go.

    Coolbook is the solution.

I had both an 11" ultimate and a 13" ultimate. I preferred the extra screen real estate so I wanted to keep the 13" .... but the fan noise bugged me.

Flash, running windows via VM, photo editing, moving large files all made my 13" roar. (For whatever reason the 11" ran much quieter doing the same tasks.)

I'd read some posts here about Coolbook, I was reluctant to try it ... as a last resort before deciding to give up the 13" I installed it, used the recommend settings found here in this forum and voila my 13" has ran much quieter and cooler since.

I can work in Windows for hours, no fan noise, watch Flash everything.

Very impressed, it allowed me to keep my 13"!

I'm going to a university this year and I've saved up some money to buy either base model Air or iMac.
I'm going to receive a ipad2 from ma uncle and I was wondering if buying the imac was worth it bc its better performance.
Would it be alright if I take the ipad to classes and work in the iMac?
What I do in the computer are gaming, news, youtube, and music

What he's doing is not so bright, but that's what he's specialized in, crack DRMs, and he's old enough to want to make a buck or two, you can't blame him trying. Sure it's not a long term plan but like any full-on criminal, he will try to break into a bank before he get's caught (again) and send to prison - regardless how much people want to rally for him - it's not really legal (sure, flame me if you're a lawyer). Breaking into someone else's house and sell a copy of the key is not exactly bright not matter what you think about the house.

End of story, I hope he'll learn his lesson one day... but I doubt it. good luck but he won't survive the legal system.

This is just another nail in MS's coffin...they are a zombie walking to nowhere right now, and they have no idea where to go in terms of overall corporate strategy.

The sole MS product currently needed in Macs is Office; and by the time the agreement vanishes, we'll surely have more than 2 GREAT productivity suite choices. MS shot itself in the foot when it accepted an open XML format...from then on they have nothing strictly proprietary to tie users up.

As for Vista, it's just a dead dog now. Most of its originally advertised features have been stripped away, and most serious users aren't even considering an upgrade.

MS is close to becoming a gaming rig company, and I couldn't care less.

    GO APPLE!

That's the bottom line. You're dropping a c-note on a developer preview. If you want spend that much money to play around with go for it. In the past (except for SL) upgrades were costing around 125 so in theory you could save some money if apple follows that path. If they don't, you run the potential of over-paying for the OS

Is there going to be another iPod updater that will incorporate the features like the searching and fast scrolling letter label thing onto current 5G iPods? I hope so, that searching has been a feature calling from me for ages...:)

    i hope so also

Again, I don't feel entitled to something, my frustration isn't with the Dev Team, it's with Apple.

I agree with the frustration with Apple.

In someways, I feel bad that I have had to JB my iOS devices. But it is frustrating that it is what is necessary to try to have a reasonable experience.

For example, from the get go, I don't have to swipe to unlock. Why is something so basic not built in to the control panel? If I want to turn off Swipe To Unlock, I should be able to, period!

I find it very frustrating that I can't connect my USB card reader and read CF memory cards. My choice to upgrade from 3.2, but frustrating nonetheless.

I also should be able to change the default browser, display anything I want to VGA, change my brightness with a couple of clicks, put more on my dock, etc.

On the other hand, it is hard to dispute the number of quality apps. I know I am not married to Apple, so, if and when there is a device and OS equal to the iPad/iOS, I will have NO qualms about switching.

IMHO there is no reason to have a standard account if you will be doing administration of the computer. Standard accounts are good for users that are not to be allowed to install software or make other changes (such as children).

There are reasons to have two accounts, one that you use and another one (with admin privileges) that is kept around for diagnostic and recovery purposes. It can be a life saver if your user account gets hosed and you can't get logged in.

For Toy Story 3 coming out this week, I wanted to take advantage of the ATV drives that the Iconfactory put out. I'm hoping they put out a few more, but these are kind of cool for the time being.

Over the course of time, mobiles will displace consoles.

We can already mirror the iPad 2 onto HDTVs. Not the best news for dedicated consoles. It's not perfect, but it's a powerful portent. Dedicated devices (as opposed to convergence) are destined to DIE.

iCal this. Then in 2-3 years revisit this comment and be astounded.

compare a Ipad 2 graphics to a NGP that is why they will die. The game systems will cost less and out put better graphics and have better controls. Your not thinking straight if you want to play Ipad games and not Console games on your TV

November yahoooo soon be bonfire night :D,

ok I made this background in Photoshop after seeing a very similar one on 4walled (http://4walled.org/) but that one looked very tired, hence making one from scratch so there's *No Link* to it, I removed the dock using Mirage 2 (http://www.macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16802835) for snow leopard and the indicators are from the Eclipse dock (http://macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16796046) enlarged in photoshop and installed via Candybar 3 (http://www.panic.com/candybar/)

The old/current matte displays look so lifeless, compared to new glossy displays....

And nobody's going to pay the prices asked, for such old tech. no matter how good the quality... seemingly so close to an update, no matter how far away it is.

Have you spent time working with one of the new glossy displays? I used a new 24" iMac at my day job and it drove me nuts with the reflections. Last week I bought a new MacPro for home and happily grabbed a 23" ACD. So, you better update your stats when you say "nobody's" going to buy an existing ACD.

I bought one, and I love it! If I want glossy, I'll master the DVD and play it back on my TV.

My kids are disappointed that there is no iSight camera, but I reminded them that they aren't getting to use my MacPro anyway, so it doesn't matter. :D

I'm thinking a January release to compete with Vista. I wouldn't mind if they delayed until March to cram more features in, but at that point there's little they can do. Otherwise the Vista vs. reviews will be vs. Tiger not Leopard which will mean that Apple won't look like the innovator that it is. I suspect a free "10.6" may come in about a year with more business (and other) features to compete with SP1 (when they start buying Vista.)

Ok for those concerned about picking up such a device and pressing 18 buttons by accident DO NOT FEAR.

If you read closely in the appleinsider article it explains that the device can detect if it's being held or pressed as if it were being touched as a button by measuring the length of time of contact.

You are reading into this a bit too much.

What Apple is referring to in the TN is that xinetd/inetd were deprecated as a means for users/admin and 3rd parties to launch daemons. Instead you should use launched.

That doesn't mean that Apple cannot use them as a means for launching and maintaining their own services. And indeed they are. The implementation noted in the Network Services Admin PDF is starkly different from how launchd is used.

So I was courtside for the UW-Milwaukee vs. Illinois NCAA Sweet Sixteen game last night covering it for UWM. I was right next to the basket in front of the Illini Band...BLASTING AWAY. The filled to capacity crowd in their orange, and our section in it's black and gold roared at unbelievable volumes upon each basket made. After about 20 minutes, and noticeing that some of the other photogs had iPods on, I figured what better place to put my Shure E3c's to the test, and I was getting a headache anyway. I grabbed my 60GB iPod Photo and my Shure's, stuck em in and...nothing. I heard next to nothing. With the exception of some incredibly "blatty" trumpets, there was nothing but a low and almost unnoticeable rumble coming from the outside. I spent the second half listening to my iPod, and it wasn't even at 75% volume...I love these earphones!

P.S. Pearl and the gang will be back next year...GO PANTHERS!!!
